What a PNG is

PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was and is the common format that supports transparency. That makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos and flat graphics, and a wasteful one for photographs.

What we do to your file

We re-encode the picture with an optimised encoder, strip out the camera and location metadata you probably did not mean to publish, and convert the colour profile to standard sRGB so it looks the same everywhere. The picture itself is never cropped or resized.

Will compressing my PNG make it look worse?

No. PNG compression is lossless: every pixel comes back exactly as it went in. That is also why the savings are smaller than they would be on a lossy format — there is no quality to trade away.

How much smaller will my PNG get?

It depends entirely on the picture. A screenshot, a logo or a chart can lose most of its size, because those images use few distinct colours. A photograph saved as PNG will barely move; convert it to JPG or WEBP instead.

Does compressing a PNG change its dimensions?

No. Compression changes only the number of bytes the file takes up. The width and height in pixels are untouched. Use the Resize tool if you want fewer pixels, and do that first — resizing then compressing beats compressing alone.

Can I compress a PNG to an exact size in KB?
