Convert PNG to JPG

A photograph saved as PNG is often several times larger than it needs to be, because PNG stores every pixel exactly whether or not anyone could tell. Converting that photo usually cuts the size by 80% or more with no visible difference. JPG opens in every browser, every phone gallery, every office program and every upload form there is. When a website rejects your image, JPG is almost always what it wanted instead.

Some, yes. PNG stores every pixel exactly and JPG does not, so the encoder discards the detail it judges least visible. On a photograph the difference is not something you can see at normal size, but it is a one-way trip — keep the PNG if you might need to edit the picture again.

Transparent areas are filled with white, because JPG has no way to store them. If the transparency matters — a logo that has to sit on a coloured background, for instance — convert to PNG or WEBP instead, both of which keep it.

PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was and is the common format that supports transparency. That makes it the right choice for screenshots, logos and flat graphics, and a wasteful one for photographs.

The width and height in pixels stay exactly the same — only the way those pixels are stored changes, which is what changes the file size. Expect the JPG to be smaller than the PNG in most cases. Use the Resize tool if you want to change the dimensions too.
