Why compressed images matter

What we do to your file

We re-encode the picture with an optimised, progressive encoder, strip out camera and location metadata you probably do not want to publish, and convert the colour profile to standard sRGB so it looks the same everywhere. The picture itself is never cropped or resized.

Use a quality setting between 75 and 85 — at that range JPEG discards detail your eye cannot see while cutting file size by roughly half. Our Recommended level does exactly this. JPEG compression is lossy, so some data is always discarded; the goal is to stay above the point where the loss becomes visible.

How much smaller will my image get?

A typical photo from a phone camera drops by 60% to 80% at the Recommended level. The exact saving depends on the picture: photos with lots of fine detail, like grass or foliage, compress less than smooth images like a plain sky or a screenshot.

Does compressing an image reduce its dimensions?

No. Compression changes only the file size in kilobytes; the width and height in pixels stay the same. If you want fewer pixels, use the Resize Image tool instead.
